Will You Have GPS with That Device?

By Christina Mulberry

New technologies applied to electronic devices are rolled out routinely. Some strike a cord with the public and proliferate wildly. Touchscreens were introduced to wide acclaim. They were soon found on cell phones, MP3 players, digital cameras, camcorders, GPS devices, and more. For some, they are simply more intuitive than buttons and menus. For others, a touchscreen is simply a sleek, modern look they love.

Bluetooth and WiFi are more examples of technologies that have shown up everywhere in recent years. Another is GPS capabilities. Using Global Positioning Satellites, this technology allows us to locate things anywhere around the globe.

Standalone GPS devices are coveted by drivers as they can provide turn-by-turn directions to lead us to where we need to go. They can tell you where the nearest bank is, how to get there, and map out the easiest route. They can re-route you when traffic is tied up and in some instances, tell you in advance of such problems so that the trouble can be avoided altogether.

Some of these standalone GPS devices are made specifically for use in hiking and other outdoor sports. They come with topographical maps, compasses, barometric altimeters, and more. Some are also designed for use on the water for fisherman or boaters.

But GPS now has many other applications. It can be found in cameras and camcorders as well. One of the main attractions with GPS in these devices is that it allows the user to geotag their images and recordings. This simply means that the location will be recorded accurately, even when the traveler doesn't remember the exact location of a particular spot.

GPS can also be found in watches. Using GPS, some watches can be used as locators. Beyond this however, there are also fitness oriented watches that use GPS to measure speed, distance, and so forth. They are a great tool for those trying to reach fitness or sports performance goals. Their accuracy exceeds that of sports watches that use a mechanical means of counting steps and so forth.

Of course, many cell phones also offer GPS. For some users, their cell phone can now double as a standalone GPS device for navigational purposes when driving. Beyond this however, cell phones with GPS are also sought after by protective parents. Some cell phones designed specifically for young children tout their ability to allow parents to know the location of their children at all times.

Certainly, there are other individuals that one would hope to be able to keep track of at all times. We are now seeing personal GPS locators appear on the market that are small enough to wear on the wrist or around the neck. For those who care for an elderly person with Alzheimer's or some other degenerative illness that causes cognitive decline, it can be important to assure a wandering loved one can be located quickly.

Another application that seems to be gaining steam, is GPS for pets. Yes, for pets. Microchipping a pet can allow a lost animal to be returned to anxious owners, but only after someone finds them and decides to take them in for a scan. A GPS collar informs the owner as soon as the animal wanders away and allows them to immediately locate their pet.

Certainly GPS creates concern for some in regards to privacy. It has certainly been used by rescuers and law enforcement to locate both victims and perpetrators, demonstrating both it's usefulness and it's potential for misuse. However, it will be up to the public to decide whether the advantages outweigh the potential disadvantages as GPS continues to show up in more and more products.

Regardless of what the GPS on my cell phone says, I am not at home sitting on my dresser.

LOL!
I'm happy you're one of the minority that has no qualms about being disconnected from your cell phone.

I think that all cell phones should be equipped with GPS and if the phone is moving, the GPS will shut down the call.I saw a boy riding his bike, one hand on the handle bars and talking on the hand-held cell phone. This boy was about 8 or 9 years old.
Thank you for sharing, Christina.
Best wishes.

There are actually products on the market that will do this essentially. Something many parents consider, I'm sure. (of course, there are many parents who could use it on themselves as well)

What a wonderful idea to have GSP for pets. My cat is an indoors cat, but if he went outside, I would certainly be looking in to this. I think I read somewhere that golfers are using GPS to look for golf balls. Of course I'd still have to figure out how to get the ball out of the water hazard once I'd located it ...

yes, I've seen the ones for golfers. I've never been a golfer, I would need GPS to actually locate the ball and make contact in the first place.

Thanks for the intrl. GPS is one of the things on my wish list.

It can certainly be handy; especially when on road trips.
