Why Parents and Grandparents Should Text Message
By Cristina Mulberry
Text messaging is booming as a method of communication. Studies in recent years however show that the use of text messaging is much heavier with those under the age of 30. In fact, 80% of all text messages are reportedly sent by those in the younger age bracket. For teenagers, text messaging comprises most of their communication by phone as voice calls are limited; indicating clearly it is a preferred communication mode. The significance of these findings indicate that: 1) Parents and grandparents probably don't understand the text messages that their children are sending 2) Parents and grandparents probably are missing out on a primary method of communication with their kids Certainly, it is more important for parents and grandparents to maintain verbal communication with their children. However, keeping in touch via text message could potentially improve communication further. Text messaging is particularly useful for parents and grandparents who are trying to keep track of their children, attempting to be available to them at all times, or to trying to maintain ties as they mature and become busy with activities, school, and jobs. Because it is silent, a quick question, response, or "check-in" is unobtrusive. There is no ringing phone, no conversation, and in fact, responses can be delayed so that meetings and other activities aren't interrupted. It allows the receiver to respond at a time that is appropriate for them while assuring that the communication does indeed occur. Text messaging is also great for those with a hearing impairment. For grandparents who may have a hearing loss, there is no struggle to understand a call and the caller doesn't have to raise their voice. Even for those grandparents who have difficulty handling the tiny buttons on a cell phone, there is the option of sending text messages by computer. The larger keyboard of a computer is often comfortable even for those that may have trouble with cell phone keypads. Sending text messages by computer offers the additional advantage of being free. Google, AOL, and Yahoo all offer messaging programs that can provide this service. Many cellular providers also allow messages to be sent from their website and there are also a number of sites online that provide free SMS services. For parents and grandparents who are timid about starting it is important to realize that incorporating the text messaging lingo and symbols that kids often use is not a requirement. Over time however, learning a few of these will be handy. It makes text messaging much quicker and since there is a 160 character limit on any text message, such symbols and abbreviations are useful. To assist in learning more about text messaging symbols and abbreviations, there are many websites online that can help. Books are also available to get you started. Either way, with or without the "jargon", text messaging can be a great way of staying in touch with people you care about. |
