Why Online Marketers Need to Focus on What They Know

By Christina Mulberry

When I first started out working online as an affiliate marketer, I struggled to identify an appropriate niche. I considered what was popular, what people were looking for, and what competition existed. However, I failed to recognize the importance of knowing, and even enjoying, the topic I was about to choose.

I don't mean to indicate that you can't possibly promote products or services without being a top expert in the subject area, but it certainly makes things much easier. There are a number of reasons why passion and knowledge can go a long way in assuring the long term success of a marketing endeavor. These are the same reasons why many niche marketers are successful when sticking with their hobbies and favorite avocations.

1. Consider volume.

Success online takes time. It also takes volume. You probably won't write just one blog, you'll write several. You won't create one website alone. You may create many sites or you'll create multiple webpages to support the one site. You won't just write an article or two on the topic, you'll write hundreds, and yes, perhaps thousands. All of that content will need to be unique. You can't just learn a few facts and create that volume of content. That volume comes from indepth knowledge, the ability to look at it from many perspectives, the knowledge of the details, the ability to focus on the smallest characteristics, and so forth.

Content is seldom successful as a standalone item. You must create those additional pages or sites with unique content which links back to your other pages. You can't just keep repeating yourself but it should be related. You can do this when the topic is one you know well.

2. Consider the reputation you must build.

Your audience can tell if you're knowledgeable or passionate. If they come to trust you, they will follow. If they don't get the message that you know what you're talking about and/or care about it, they will go elsewhere. They can find a sales pitch anywhere. You will need to develop that reputation of providing good, reliable information or exciting conversation to get anywhere.

Gaining support from other marketers in your field of endeavor generally requires the same thing. It's hard to fake expertise or enthusiasm over the long haul.

3. Consider the sustained level of effort needed.

As I stated above, it's not impossible to promote products and services you don't know well or care about. However, doing this is harder as time passes while you strive for success. If you love crafting, you can talk about it for 20 years and never get bored. If you don't use vitamins and herbal supplements, it's a chore to learn about them and chatting with others about the topic doesn't energize you to do more. Your drive and productivity will certainly suffer in such situations. Success online is difficult enough without having to fight yourself the entire distance.

Writing hundreds or thousands of articles and webpages on a given topic takes a real time committment. If you add in having to spend many hours researching a topic that is foreign, it becomes nearly impossible. Ideally, much of this content can be generated with minimal hard research time, and come from the vast well of your own mind and experience.

4. Consider what you'll really be offering others.

If you are knowledgeable on a topic, you're sure to create content that is of use to readers. Your audience will benefit from your efforts. The unique knowledge and experience you have will be added to the internet, making it a better place, not just a place where advertising continues to explode.

You have to ask yourself if you would rather be making money doing what you love and making a positive contribution or if you're ok slugging it out each day and offer nothing of real value. The answer for most is simple; meaningful work that builds a better online environment AND which facilitates their success is the right choice. If you capitalize on the topics that you know and/or love best, your journey is more likely to bring about the results you're seeking.

You've said it so well. After trying it both ways I totally agree with you. If you're just choosing a niche because you think it's going to make you money, you might as well get a job you hate because you're going to feel the same at the end of the day, and at least with the job you're more likely to actually get paid. That's my experience anyway.

This is why I chose my niches. I tried to look at the four things you talked about: 1) volume 2) potential for income/market demand 3) my own skill and knowledge about the niche 4) My passion for it. I know that these are things I want to be involved in for the rest of my existence.
And Donna makes a great point too. If you hate the niche, you just traded a real life boring job for an online boring job.
