Why Many Seniors Need a Cell Phone
By Cristina Mulberry
There are certainly many individuals over the age of 65 who make use of cell phones and are very comfortable using them. However, there is a disproportionate share of those in the older age brackets that do not. Certainly, the decision to make use of, or pay for, a cell phone is a justifiable personal choice; however, as many caregivers would agree, there are a number of reasons why cell phones are good devices for many seniors to adopt. -- The ability to call others, or emergency, when away from the house. This is no different for seniors than it is for others; the need is merely accentuated for those seniors who may have more health issues. For instance, if a fall occurs while out in the yard, dizziness when walking around the block, or some other emergency occurs when driving to the store, help is just a button push away. -- The ability to call for help even if an older individual isn't able to get to the landline phone in the other room. This is possible only if the cell phone is kept in a pocket or on a clip around the waist. The small size of a cell phone makes this convenient. -- The ability to make calls when out and about without recalling the phone number. Thanks to the phone book stored in a cell phone, if the car breaks down help can be contacted by calling family or neighbors even if the individual can't recall the number in the heat of the moment. Of course, one button dialing is also a handy feature on many cell phones. -- Increased socialization. For some seniors the issue of isolation can become a problem as they age. Children sometimes move a bit further away, a spouse may die, and friends may be fewer. Having a cell phone even for those who stay at home can potentially increase contact with younger family members. Grandkids love to text message, it is their preferred communication mode. If a grandparent is willing to learn text messaging, it's likely grandchildren will increase their contact. There is also the side benefit of making family members feel more confident of a senior's safety when they know that an older relative has access to them whenever needed. The future may even hold additional benefits as further technology is being developed which will make the cell phone an even handier tool for many seniors. Reports indicate that cell phones in the future may monitor blood sugar, blood pressure, and other health related signs; perhaps reporting such statistics to physicians when needed.
