When a Plasma TV is the Best Choice
By Cristina Mulberry
Choosing a television can be difficult with so many technologies available. In the current market, LCD and plasma remain the most popular options for the average consumer. As their technologies have matured, many of the original shortcomings have been addressed and minimized making both a good choice. In the early days, a plasma TV was known to have a significant risk of burn in when images were left static on the screen for more than several minutes. New technologies have greatly reduced this risk however. One of the advantages of a plasma TV over an LCD is it's superior ability to deal with fast motion without blurring. For those who watch a great deal of sports and other fast action, plasma can be the perfect choice. Plasma screens are also known for their ability to produce the deepest blacks, resulting in unmatched color contrast. This fact means that a plasma screen often provides the superior picture. For anyone who has a room with low ambient light, a plasma screen is indeed the best choice while LCDs are suited better for more brightly lit rooms. For those searching for the largest screen, plasma is generally the technology to seek out. LCD's top out at about 65" (most are smaller) while a plasma of 103 inches can be found. For those seeking the lower price tag, plasma may also be a great choice. A plasma TV tends to be significantly less expensive than an LCD TV of the same size. Long term costs however may even the playing field as a plasma TV may consume nearly 1/3 more power than an LCD screen. More energy conscious plasma TVs are anticipated to hit the market in 2009 however. In addition, smaller plasma screens are expected to make a showing in the US market that same year. Smaller screens mean more affordable screens as well as ones which are more conservative on energy use. With LCD and plasma televisions having similar lifespans and good viewing angles, the choice can be difficult. However, by assessing the environment in which you will view the television, the type of programming you prefer, and the size screen you want, the decision making process may become easier. |
