What to Do with an Old Digital Camera
By Cristina Mulberry
Digital cameras have been around for a number of years now, and many consumers are on their second or third model. Some of the original cameras ceased to function while others were merely replaced by models that offered more megapixels, better censors, or more attractive functions. What happens to these older cameras and more importantly, what can we do with cameras we no longer need in the future? There are of course several options. For a camera that is still functioning, you can pass it along to your child. Most children love taking pictures and giving them a digital camera you have retired is a great way of saving the additional expense of buying another. Of course, it must be an age appropriate gift, but in many instances it will provide many hours, and indeed, possibly years worth of enjoyment. Of course, if you don't have children there are educational institutions that could benefit from the donation of camera equipment. Global Classroom Connection is one organization I discovered online that accepts these donations and uses them world wide for learning purposes. The organization pairs up classrooms around the world and uses the cameras to let the children communicate and learn more about each other and their cultures. Of course, another option for a functioning digital camera is to sell it. Sites such as e-Bay and Craigslist are good places to find buyers for such devices and can provide a bit of cash. For a camera that doesn't function, it's best to have it re-cycled so that it doesn't end up in a landfill with a few billion tons of other e-waste while taking any precious metals with it. Most areas of the country have local recycling centers but Earth911.org is a great site that will help you search out local resources for e-waste disposal and recycling. Don't leave that old camera in a drawer and even more importantly don't let it add to a landfill, there are other options that make good sense. |
