Top Reasons Discussion Forums Should be Part of Your Internet Marketing
By Cristina Mulberry
Marketing online is a tricky and ever changing business. Blogs, article writing, social bookmarking, and forum participation continue to be at the forefront for most online businesses however. All of these strategies of course, require a significant time committment and regular participation to be effective. Most new internet marketers find themselves a bit overwhelmed sometime during their first few months online with the number of tasks to be completed and the time required to perform them. Alas, they thought most of their work was done when they finished building their website and submitting it to the various search engines and directories! For these individuals, it can be important to understand the benefits to be gained by any given strategy. For those people, I will lay out some of the top reasons, why forum participation can be critical in any internet marketing campaign. -- Establishing yourself/your business as an expert in front of potential targeted customers. If selected carefully, a forum will generally consist of participants who are specifically interested in your niche topic. For instance, if you sell camera equipment, then by participating in a photography related forum you will have a direct line of communication with interested customers. This does not mean you will be posting ads or simple links to your site. It does mean you will be answering questions and initiating relevant discussions which in turn will create your reputation. As time goes by you should develop followers; people who recognize that you have a lot to offer and will seek you out for information and purchases. -- Gaining backlinks to your website/pages. When signing up to participate in any online forum you should acquaint yourself with the forum rules. You should be very careful to avoid spamming the forum. Some forums allow you to post links only in your "bio". Participants who are interested in what you have to say will evenutally check out your bio. Other forums allow links in your signature. Some even allow you to include links in your responses when appropriate. No forum or forum participant will appreciate unrelated links and by placing them you will likely be banned and create a bad reputation. -- Learning about what matters to potential customers. Forum participation is a great way to learn what potential customers are interested in or concerned about. Such discussions are great fodder for article writing, website content, identification of hot products, and so forth. For any internet marketer who struggles for topics to write about, I would suggest spending some time in a related forum. -- Networking with other internet marketers. Business relationships are sometimes formed during the course of forum particpation. "Experts" sharing ideas and discussions, supporting each other in answers, sometimes voting for good responses, and so forth are not uncommon. This relationship can carry over into other endeavors such as in "social bookmarking" support, blog trackbacks, and so forth. These activities all work to "virally" promote a marketers endeavors online. -- Heading off problems. If your business has grown then there is a chance that forum participants are acquainted with it. As with any business, there will occasionally be a negative or borderline type of experience. If a forum participant voices concerns during a discussion and you are present, you can address it appropriately rather than letting the discussion snowball and ruin your reputation. Such discussions can also alert you to problems you were previously unaware of which need to be addresssed. Certainly, forum participation requires a good deal of time, afterall, it is mostly about building relationships. However, it is time well spent and new internet markerters need to be sure they include it high on their list of things to do. |
