Top Characteristics for Succeeding in Internet Marketing
By Christina Mulberry
I started out in internet marketing a few years ago now. It's been a challenging experience. I was thrown into it when, after years of high stress, constant change, and overwhelming responsibilities, I decided to quit my job and fend for myself at home. Yes, I left having no idea how I was going to make money from that point forward. It's been a path I would not recommend for anyone. Working for yourself, in a business you have no knowledge of or preparation for, is hard. It's something that should be entered into with a safety net close at hand. I had a nice amount of money saved and invested but I certainly wasn't ready to retire at 46. However, the Kamikaze approach was how I started my adventure. I have made progress and am now able to say that I earn a decent living online. Yes, I can stay in my pajamas, and yes, I earn money while I sleep. But, and this is a big but, I still work well over 40 hours a week without fail. I'm still hopeful things will slow down in the future. Based on my experience, I would say there are two primary charactertics one needs to have to succeed in internet marketing. They may not be exactly what every guru would tell you are the keys to success, but in my case they are definitely what pulled me through to the other side. First, I would say that a complete willingness to learn and try new things is paramount. I had no previous knowledge regarding internet marketing. I wasn't even cognizant that it existed or offered any possibilities for a person like myself. I certainly knew no one who had so much as dabbled in it and never found a mentor either. I had to be willing to go it alone. To read books, visit forums, ask strangers, study the work of others, experiment, and so forth. I sometimes had to ignore the advice of those who had plenty to offer but few credentials to support their ideas. On occasion, I even had to ignore criticism and downright nastiness. I had to learn about marketing affiliate products, linking, SEO, keywords and keyword research, HTML, writing, social networking, and many other things. None of which was on my radar prior to this. I was sometimes intimidated but I always decided to trudge forward even when I felt inadequate. I'm certain even today, the need to continue learning will never end. The second characteristic that I feel is vital in any success I've had to this point, is persistence. Sure persistence helped me get through the huge learning curve, but it did more than that as well. I have found in internet marketing, that you can do all of the right things and still not succeed. At least not right away. In fact, you may do the right thing for a year, and still not succeed, at least not to the point that you recognize it. For instance, you might create a website and not get visitors. You may then begin blogging and still not make sales. Later you may begin writing articles to drive traffic, develop backlinks, and so forth but see only a few pennies trickling in and a few click throughs occurring each week. Now persistence comes into play. If you've increased visits by 20% and revenue by a few dollars, then maybe you just need to keep repeating this effort. And in fact, expand it. If you've written a few dozen articles and earned just a bit of money, double your efforts, write several dozen more articles. Write on two more sites, expand your presence. Now, see if your earnings haven't doubled or tripled. Sure, it may still only be enough to buy dinner for two at this point, but now you see the potential. From the bottom, the hill appears to be too high, but if you start climbing now, and keep going, you'll get there soon enough. Persistence doesn't mean keep doing things that don't work, but it does mean look for the signs and when there's a glimmer, focus there and don't be discouraged by the speed. Things will accelerate at some point. I don't pretend to be making a million dollars at internet marketing, and seriously doubt that I ever will. But from where I sit at this point, I feel confident that with a continued willingness to learn and adapt what I'm doing, paired with the persistence to keep things rolling along, there's nothing else necessary to assure my "success". |

Boy Christina... What you said in your article mirrors my experience so far -- up to the point where I now need to practice persistence. It is indeed a longgggggg haul.

Yeah, and you just have to have faith that there is a light down there at the end of the tunnel even when you don't see it.
Right on!! How were you able to read my mind? Great article, thanks for sharing.

And thanks for reading and commenting!
Amen to everything you wrote. My experience replicates yours. I always have to smile when I come across somebody who believes the hype - that this all happens by magic as we lounge beach side. LOL

Yeah, and it's too bad so many of those people pay good money to learn all those "secrets".
It has been nothing short of a long hard road. Even times when reinvesting earnings is not possible due to family needs, but over time you can succeed through trial and error and a lot of hard work. A million hats are worn it seems, but the payoff is far more than money ... pride.

I familiar with all of those hats! Almost makes you miss the days of having co-workers or employees to help carry that load.
I agree 100%, internet marketing isn't something that you should attempt expecting to make good money right off the bat. It takes YEARS of non-stop work. I work now more than I ever have at any other job. If I had to give anyone a piece of advice, start your internet marketing while you have a day job. When it picks up years down the line, then consider doing it full time, or ease into it. Working for yourself is awesome, but it's definitely not LESS work.

It's like everything I guess, if it's worth it, it's not easy. The difference is, this much work for an under appreciative employer is drudgery and torture. When you do it for yourself, it's rewarding, exciting, and a boost to your confidence.
