Tips to Cut Text Messaging Costs

By Cristina Mulberry

Text messaging costs, ask almost anyone who has a teenager with a cell phone. It costs to send them and it costs to receive them. Of course text messages can also be a very convenient, quick, and unobtrusive way of communicating. So, how can families take advantage of the service without crippling their budget?

First, for anyone who receives unwanted text messages, it is important to block "unknown" or "private callers". These numbers are often telemarketers. If a user is receiving spam they should also report it to their cellular provider, and the charges should be reversed.

Secondly, finding phones and plans that are appropriate for kids can be important in controlling costs. For families with younger children, phones are often used that don't have texting capabilities or which have parental controls that allow calls and messages only from numbers programmed into the phone. Kajeet phones are just one example.

For families with text happy teenagers, there are plans such as T-Mobile's KidConnect and AT&T's Smart Limits that limit texting automatically. Prepaid plans can operate the same way.

Thirdly, knowing your text messaging usage is important when choosing your plan. Just like voice calls, if usage is high enough, it's cheaper to buy a package. Shoppers need to be sure they don't pay for more messaging than they will use but likewise want to be sure they have enough, as exceeding the limit gets expensive. Unlimited plans for instance are a good deal only if a family or individual is a heavy user of the service.

A final consideration is to make use of text messaging through lower cost and free services which can be found on the internet. Certainly Google and Yahoo offer free messaging services. Others can be found by searching on "free text messaging".

Text messaging has increased greatly in popularity and is useful in many situations. Smart families identify their limits before diving in and are able to use it wisely.
