The Top eBook Readers Under $200

By Christina Mulberry

Currently one of the hottest electronic devices in the marketplace are e-book readers. During the most recent holiday season they were one of several must have devices and during the first half of 2010, there have been several new models introduced.

Consumers love how easily they allow one to carry hundreds, and even thousands of books around in a small lightweight device. With an ever increasing number of e-book readers on the market however, the question becomes which ones are the best.

There are of course a number of ways to evaluate these devices to come to the conclusion of which is best. However, for the sake of simplicity and perhaps for the measure that means the most in the real world, I will take a look at the e-book readers which are the most affordable, those under $200, and examine which of those consumers report the highest satisfaction. I'm using data primarily from Amazon and my own website to look at customer feedback.

According to this information the following e-book readers are the best of those costing under $200. They are in no particular order.

1. The Amazon Kindle
While the Kindle DX is very popular, it costs well above $200, the smaller 6" device has earned raves from those who currently use it. In addition, it is now priced below $200. It's e-Ink display has no backlight, is easy on the eyes, and is perfectly readable even in sunlight. It gives readers access to several hundred thousand books, newspapers from around the world, magazines, blogs, and more. It even has a basic web browser that lets you examine text based websites.

The Kindle has a 2GB hard drive and can hold 1,500 e-books which are backed up by Amazon so you don't have to worry about losing them, ever. You can adjust the text size, zoom in, highlight, look up words in the dictionary, make annotations, and bookmark pages. You can even have Kindle read to you using the text-to-speech features and the built-in speaker or headphones.

2. Aluratek Libre
The Libre also supports all of the popular e-book formats as well as PDF and BMP, JPEG, GIF, and animated GIF image files. It also has 2GB of storage via an SD card and features bookmarking, auto-off function, auto page turning, numerous font choices, content search, zoom, and the ability to view the screen in either portrait or landscape modes. Users can read for up to a full 24 hours continuously without having to recharge. One of the more interesting attributes of this device however is that it is waterproof to depths of 16 feet, great for going to the pool or the beach.

While there are a number of other sub $200 e-book readers that are reasonably good possibilities, the scores they received from current customers didn't meet my 90% critera. Certainly, there are also a number of other devices that received rave reviews, but they have a higher price point.

I'd like to add the Kobo e-reader, from Chapters Indigo, a Canadian site. The Kobo costs $149 and supports multiple content types. I don't own one (yet!)

You mention the Kindle has no backlighting. Is this an advantage? Seems like a backlight option would make night reading possible. Otherwise you've got to break out the old book light just like an old school paper book.

That's true, but it's true of most of these devices. It makes it easier on your eyes and readable in daylight.

Machinist, I can't speak from personal experience here, but according to Amazon re the 6" Kindle -

"Paper-Like Screen

Utilizing the latest in electronic-ink display technology, Kindle provides a crisp black-and-white 6" screen with the same appearance and readability of printed paper. Sharp and natural with no glare or backlight, reading on Kindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Those who see it for the first time always do a double-take. The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically."

The screen is much smaller, but I use my Android Smart Phone as a reader with the free Aldiko software. It is SO convenient to be able to read a book anywhere.

Yes, there are apps for this for some smart phones. For those of use who prefer a larger screen though, these ebook readers are great.
