The Tools You Need to Keep Your Camera Lens Clean

By Cristina Mulberry

The lens on a digital camera is critical to creating good pictures. When consumers buy cameras they often know that they want more than 3 or 4 megapixels, and perhaps that a larger sensor may help translate into better images. But many fail to realize that a quality lens, such as a Carl Zeiss lens, can also do a great deal to help them produce better photos.

Of course, even with the best possible lens, great shots aren't guaranteed. Mastering some basic photography skills is also important. (See tips at the link listed below.) Failure to understand some of the basics can't be remedied by even the best equipment. Additionally, once the camera is in hand, caring for it is critical as well to assure that it continues to perform as intended.

Shots that are otherwise quite nice can be ruined by a scratch, fingerprints, or accumulated dirt on the lens. The lens is often the most expensive component on a digital camera. If damage by any of these environmental hazards occurs due to the failure to properly maintain the lens, the camera often must be replaced entirely.

Because of the importance of proper lens care, it's suggested that shoppers should purchase appropriate cleaning tools and/or protective items at the same time they purchase their new digital camera. Some of the items to consider include:

-- A camera bag.

A camera bag can protect your camera, it's lens, and all other parts and accessories. In addition, it makes everything portable.

-- A lens cap.

Many cameras have an automatic lens cover which is optimal. When this isn't present some type of lens cap is necessary to protect the lens when the camera is not in use.

-- An inexpensive UV filter.

These affordable filters act as a physical barrier against damage to the lens. They also protect it against UV rays.

-- A Blower Brush.

A blower brush allows the user to remove dust and light dirt particles without actually contacting the lens and exposing it to the risk of scratching.

When contact with the lens is necessary to remove smudges there are other options.

-- Camera lens cloth and solution.

The only solution that should ever come in contact with your camera lens should be one designed especially for such use. It should not be abrasive and should be applied to a cloth rather than directly to the lens. A microfiber cloth is often the best choice as it will not scratch. Some very soft bristle brushes manufactured especially for camera lenses are sometimes used as well.

-- A lens pen.

A lens pen is very convenient to take along as it fits in the pocket just as a pen or marker would. They are effective on smudges and dust.

None of these items are very expensive and are very portable as well. Purchasing and using them can prevent damage to your camera lens and result in better photographs.
