The Pros and Cons of the Samsung Knack for Seniors
By Christina Mulberry
News articles published in the past year or more have reported that many seniors don't take advantage of the conveniences and safety aspects offered by a cell phone. For some seniors this is due to phones which are difficult to manipulate due to tiny buttons, difficult to read font, and inadequate volume. For others, it's due to confusing menus and a myriad of functions they won't use. While for another segement of the senior population the cost alone is enough to keep them away. The Jitterbug and ClarityLife C900 are some of the options on the market which were designed specifically for seniors with some special needs. Recently however, another option emerged which is perhaps a bit more "subtle" in it's special nature. The Samsung Knack looks a bit less obvious as a phone designed specifically for seniors. The size of the Knack is good in general; a bit larger than the average cell phone for easier manipulation but not so large as to draw a lot of unnecessary attention to it. It's rectangular design however isn't as sure in the grasp as the curved design of the Jitterbug. The Knack does a nice job of keeping things simple. It lacks an MP3 player, camera/camcorder function, or web browser so that their are fewer features and menus to deal with when operating the phone. It provides voice calling, voice messages, and text messaging giving the user access to the both forms of communication. The Knack offers an external display that shows the time, numeric caller ID, battery life, and signal strength. This allows the user to see this critical information without having to flip the phone open, a great plus if a person is busy or has any minor coordination/speed problems. The font is reasonably large although not quite as easy to read as say the Jitterbug models. Another slight drawback is that the caller ID does not provide a name, so the user would have to recognize the caller's number in order to know who was attempting to reach them. For those with any difficulty hearing, the Knack is hearing aid compatible and offers a speakerphone. Volume is reasonable. There is no additional padding around the earpiece to help shut out background noise, but for some seniors this won't be a problem. The Knack does accept a headset in case noise canceling headsets would be beneficial. The keypad is fairly spacious and the buttons large. The menus are pretty basic although the Jitterbug would probably rate a bit better in this area as well. Voice dialing is available however, which is especially nice for those with any motor coordination problems. The Knack also includes a dedicated 911 and In Case of Emergency button. In addition, the Knack offers other features such as an alarm clock, calculator, and calendar. It operates off of the Verizon Wireless network and therefore, can be paired with the senior friendly Nationwide 65 plus calling plan which is a more economical option for those using fewer minutes. Overall, the Knack appears to be a good option for seniors wanting a more basic phone but who want a few more features and the look of a more modern, mainstream cell phone. |
