The Perils of Social Bookmarking
By Christina Mulberry
Social bookmarking and social media are probably the hottest internet marketing techniques going. Those involved in marketing on line have learned the power of social sites for adding backlinks to their content, developing a loyal following, boosting traffic, and making connections with other marketers. From internet novices who are beginning the journey of making an income online as a supplement to their real world job, to longtime bloggers, and even traditional corporations, social media has the potential to propel users to new levels of success. There are a number of resources on line that highlight the steps toward building your empire through social bookmarking and other social media endeavors. Any beginner would do well to study up on the topic before diving in, as even the way you set up your profile on such sites can make a difference. Equally important as knowing what to do, is knowing what to avoid. There are perils in social media and beginners need to understand this. Yes, it's certainly possible to ignore net etiquette and end up banned, or your reputation ruined. This can be extremely difficult to overcome. Over eager marketers, in their haste to promote their work, end up alienating others. Or perhaps they get involved in a flaming war, which leaves their reputation damaged. Beyond this however, there are other pitfalls to consider as you're starting out. One pitifall is joining the wrong social media site. The first thing to consider is how well your website, blog, or your niche fits within the focus of the site. Most of the larger sites are very broad in their scope, but some are not. If you write poetry for instance, promoting yourself on a tech focused site probably isn't a recipe for success. If all of the top stories are political in nature or celebrity news perhaps, then getting a top billing with your blog about parenting isn't likely. Finding people who are interested in your topics won't be easy and cross promotion with others users is unlikely. Of course finding the right social bookmarking site also requires you to consider reputation. Remember that your reputation may be influenced by the company you keep. Some social media sites publish more SPAM. When first investigating a potential social site, look at the content. A good site, will have good content front and center. SPAM is everywhere, but it should be suppressed to where it's seldom visible. Unfortunately in the effort to stop SPAM submissions, some sites will ban entire domains. If you're a writer on the internet and wish to submit pages from some of the writing sites such as Associated Content, eHow, Squidoo, Qassia, Hubpages, and others, it's worth the time to find out if this content can be accepted. Much of your social networking time won't rely on submitting your own content, but being banned from doing it at all can certainly be a stumbling block. Another significant peril in social marketing, is putting excessive time into the task. For most of us, the most critical and time consuming task we perform is writing fresh content. For those just entering the world of social media it's important not to get so tied up in the social aspect of this endeavor so as to stifle your writing or other important duties. The time you should delegate for social activites will vary based upon the connections you make and the quality of the responses you get. For this reason it's important to monitor the time spent and evaluate your results related to this. If the return on your time investment is minimal, then 20-30 mintues a day is enough. Do what works! Another potential error for beginners is to spread themselves a bit too thin. I would suggest that joining one or two sites is enough in the beginning. Evaluate how it's going before adding more. Again, check your results. Are you adding followers, are you gaining traffic, are you developing critical relationships, are you building backlinks; in other words, are there positive outcomes to justify your continued effort on that site? The last danger that's important to understand upfront is the risk of losing everything you've built up when a site decides to shut down, or crashes and decides not to revive itself. It happens, and when it does, you loose all of your bookmarks, backlinks, and traffic from that source. It's painful, but about all you can do is to diversify a bit, don't put all of your social marketing eggs in one basket. Again, having too many is deterimental time wise, but having only one could also be disastrous. Knowing where your friends and followers hang out when they aren't on your favorite social site is a good idea. Engaging with them elsewhere can also help you survive when a closure occurs. Be sure they know you, know where you are online, and can recognize you there as well. Social media is a great promotion method and it can be a great deal of fun in a world where working on your own is the norm. As long as you start out knowing about a few of the etiquette rules and the potential perils, you should find it to be very effective. |
