The Jitterbug Cell Phone: Right for Some, Wrong for Others

By Cristina Mulberry

The Jitterbug cell phone was designed and is offered to the public by GreatCall located in Del Mar California for the specific purpose of giving baby boomers and their parents a solid performing, simplified cell phone that's easy to handle. In addition, they offer plans that provide simple, straightforward billing.

Jitterbug features two phone models.

-- The "Jitterbug" which offers regular dialing with a large numeric keypad and
-- The "OneTouch" which offers three simple buttons; one for the operator, 911, and a direct dial button

While these phones may be perfect for some segments of the population they are far off the mark for others; but, of course, that is how it was intended.

These phones are targeted toward:

-- Those who want voice calling only. These phones do not offer web browsing, camera functions, built-in MP3 players, text messaging capabilities, or any other functionality often found on modern smartphones and multimedia phones. They do offer voice calling and voice mail.

-- Those who don't care about having the smallest or sleekest design. A Jitterbug phone may fit in a large pocket but they're bulky compared to most modern cell phones. They come in your choice of white or graphite but you won't find the more popular colors like pink, red, or green. They do offer an easy grip design and soft, padded cushion around the ear piece for comfort and an improved ability to block out ambient noise.

-- Those who have a bit of trouble reading the tiny print on modern cell phones. The Jitterbug phones offer larger print on the keys and on the screen.

-- Those who have any dexterity problems with the tiny keypads on the typical cell phone. The larger keypad makes dialing easy. If that isn't enough, an operator is available to place calls or the One Touch can provide single button dialing.

-- Those who don't want to commit to a 2 year cellular plan and won't use large amounts of talk time.

-- Those who seek the simplicity of a cell phone that only makes calls. If someone won't use the camera, music player, or other functions, why bother with the extra buttons and complex menus?

-- Those with a hearing impairment. Jitterbug cell phones are hearing aid compatible and offer good volume as well as a better than average seal around the ear.

On the otherhand, Jitterbug cell phones are not a good match for people with some of the following needs:

-- Those who will use more than a few hundred minutes of talk time each month. Jitterbug plans are offered which go up to 800 minutes per month but their cost is high ($80 for 800 minutes) compared to other options once a user goes beyond a few hundred minutes of use.

-- Those who want a phone that gives them more connectivity; text and multimedia messaging, web browsing, document viewing/editing and so forth are not possible with these phones.

-- Those who want a free phone. Free phones can be had for those willing to commit to a two year plan. Jitterbug does not offer this option. Their phones are $147 and no plan committment or associated termination fees are required. A money back guarantee is provided.

Clearly, the Jitterbug cell phones and plans are not right for everyone, but for some, they are the perfect communication device.

In short, Jitterbug phones are targeted toward those who are old enough to remember the jitterbug. Clever naming.
