Text Messaging on International Trips
By Cristina Mulberry
The lives of many people have expanded in recent years. We have friends in other countries, co-workers who live and work abroad, loved ones stationed in far off locales, and many often choose to travel outside of the country for both work and pleasure. As our horizons have expanded so have our communication needs. Many people have learned about the costs associated with international calls and text messages. Options such as international calling cards have received quite a bit of attention as a money saving option and certainly cellular providers are increasing the availability and affordability of international services through package deals. In addition, online services have sprung up which offer free text messaging and lower calling rates for those communicating outside of our national boundaries. For those who are needing communication solutions for when they travel outside of the country, there are some other options. Many US cellular companies offer travel phones for users which can be rented. In addition, several online business offer rental travel phones as their primary business. Text messaging while traveling outside of the country however, continues to be a bit expensive despite the fact that it's use has grown exponentially in recent years. Many travelers have found the following services to be the most convenient and affordable. -- T-Mobile's WorldClass Service. The WorldClass service provides text, picture, video, and instant messaging nearly anywhere in the world. It charges an average of 35 cents to send a message and 15 cents to receive a message. Users merely need to have a cell phone that will operate on the same frequencies used in the country where they will be staying and to activate the WorldClass service before leaving home. There is no charge for T-Mobile customers to activate the service. -- AT&T Wireless Services The AT&T service allows their customers to send text messages while traveling also. The cost to send a message is 50 cents. Any messages received are merely deducted from their existing plan allotment. Some US cellular providers are not able to offer text messaging services when customers travel outside of the country as their phones will not operate on the networks/frequencies required and/or cross billing agreements are not in place. Sprint is one example of a major provider which is not able to provide such services at this time.
