Text Messaging as a Communication Solution for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

By Cristina Mulberry

For those with mild to moderate hearing loss there are a number of cell phones on the market that can function relatively well with hearing aids. Potential buyers of course must be aware of the specific designs, hearing aid compatibility ratings, and other features that will assure optimum performance.

For those who are deaf or have a profound hearing loss however, cell phones can still be a great communication tool. One of the most convenient options for such users is the text messaging function. By making use of text messaging, the safety and security offered by cell phones is then available to these individuals as well as the convenience and fun of staying connected with family and friends at all times.

Certainly most cell phones can perform this function adequately. However, as anyone who text messages can tell you, some phones are better suited to the task. The AT&T Tilt offers a great slide out full QWERTY keypad for the task. A Blackberry on the other hand offers not only a good keypad but also text to voice (and voice to text) capabilities. Sidekicks are also a common choice.

There are of course other cell phones that are great for text messaging. The Helio Ocean, Palm Treo 755, LG Voyager, and Samsung Glyde are among them.

For individuals who can't really make use of the voice calling features in the typical cell phone plan, there are options available that are more suited to their needs. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular all offer data only plans that can eliminate the need to pay for voice calling which an individual may never use.

For those who wish to learn more about choosing the right cell phone, be sure to visit the link posted below.
