Renting a Cell Phone for Travel

By Cristina Mulberry

Cell phones are handy and we are accustomed to taking them with us everywhere we go to meet our communication needs. For those traveling outside of the country for the first time however, there are some things to know before you can just pack up your cell phone to take along.

Using a cell phone in other countries isn't always simple. First a cell phone operates with certain types of networks. The most common are CDMA, GSM, TDMA, and iDEN. If your phone operates off of a CDMA network and you travel to a country using only GSM networks your phone will not function. In addition, your phone must be able to use the same frequencies as those in the country where you are visiting.

A few weeks before you are set to leave on your trip you should investigate the cellular networks and frequencies in the country where you will be going. Luckily such things can easily be tracked down online. Contacting your cellular provider regarding your upcoming trip and the ability to make calls is also important to assure you will be able to use international roaming through them; obviously they will need to have cross billing agreements in place.

In instances where your phone itself is not compatible, there is the option of renting a cell phone. There are a couple of avenues to take that can make this an affordable and convenient choice.

First some of the US cellular companies provide rental programs for those customers who travel internationally on occasion. For instance, Sprint and Verizon Wireless have such programs.

Another option available to the occasional traveler is to rent a phone from other companies who specialize in rentals. Online, companies such as travelcell.com, cellularabroad.com, and rangeroamer.com can help to hold down costs and make the process of finding a compatible phone much easier.

For those who travel more frequently getting an unlocked quad band phone can be a good option, but for those who travel less frequently, renting can be easy and hassle free.
