Rail Trails: A Perfect Family Activity
By Cristina Mulberry
There are a wide variety of family activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. One of my favorite family fitness activities is bicycling along the many rail trails across the country. These trails can be found nearly everywhere and vary in length. Rail trails offer a number of advantages over other types of trails, bike routes, and roadways. -- Rail trails tend to be rather flat and level. Constructed along the rail bed of now defunct railroad tracks, these trails often offer the easiest cycling. Many even provide good protection from wind for long stretches as they frequently pass through wooded areas. -- Rail trails tend to be safer than many other potential bicycle routes. Motorized traffic is not allowed on rail trails. Street and road crossings are well marked and limited in many areas. Bicyclists do have to be aware of any walkers due to the difference in speed. Inline skaters can generally keep up with an average bicycle speed. -- Rail trails often begin, end, or pass through towns. This gives a family the opportunity to take a rest break or get lunch just off the trail. Some even offer "facilities" along the trail. -- Rail trails generally offer free parking at various points along the trail. -- Rail trails can be found in many locations making it easy to schedule a day of family bicycling while planning any vacation or trip. See the link below to find a rail trail in your area or an area where you plan to visit. Rail trails that are paved or surfaced with crushed limestone make for easy bicycling. My personal preference is a hybrid bike with tires that aren't too slick nor too knobby. This allows you to handle paved surfaces with minimal resistance/easy riding and yet maintain good stability in crushed limestone and occasional gravel. Beginners need to remember to take along any necessary provisions. Water, sun block, bug repellent, sweaters, and so forth, as well as a tire pump, cell phone, and small bike repair kit are a few items to consider. First time riders also need to remember that rail trails aren't loop trails; the distance you travel should only be as far as you are able to bicycle back on the return trip to your car. |
