One Indispensable Tip for Better Home Movies
By Christina Mulberry
If you recently purchased your first camcorder or you've had one but have been disappointed with they way your home movies look, there are a number of tips that can help you get better results. For the true novice however, there is one basic tip that will bring the most dramatic results. Many of us have sat through long stretches of undulating home movies. The camera sometimes darts about searching to find the subject and viewers catch only occasional glimpses of the action. The sound is likewise poor with extraneous camera noise, movement, breathing and other audible "camerman" sounds. Effectively eliminating these significant distractions is really rather simple. The single filming tip that will do the job is to get a steady shot. However, there are of course a number of basic techniques to follow that will help you achieve the steady shot. -- Purchase a camcorder with optical image stabilization. OIS acts to counter the unintentional, small movements of the hand while filming. Your scenes will have far less "bouncing around" if your camcorder includes this features. Optical image stabilization is superior to digital or electronic image stabilization. In fact, the digital version of this can have a negative influence on overall image quality. -- Use a tripod. Handheld shots are never as steady as a shot taken with a tripod or similar device. A good tripod will also have a panning head that allows you to follow movement smoothly. Think of professional movie sets; it would be very rare to see a camera handheld although you might see it on the evening news when the footage is far less steady. Many tripods are quite small and lightweight. Most will also collapse to a very portable size and there is one to suit nearly any budget. -- Learn to hold the camcorder properly. Just like a camera, it's best to grasp the camcorder with both hands, holding elbows in toward the body, and with legs/feet slightly apart for a steady base. You can brace against a doorway, tree, or other structure when available. When appropriate you can also get down on one knee for added stability. -- Stand still. Many novices will film while moving about. Not only does this assure an undulating movement but it creates a great deal of noise that makes the audio difficult to discern. If you wish to follow movement it's best to improvise a device to mount the camcorder on and move it or to use a tripod with a pan head. When all else fails, you can also turn the camcorder off, relocate, and then begin filming again rather than filming while moving. -- Operate camcorder controls with the device turned off. Fiddling with controls while filming creates unwanted movement as well as sound. Zooming while filming is particularly unsteady so it's best to stop filming as you zoom. Getting a steady shot while filming with your camcorder is the single most effective filming tip for improving your home movies if you haven't yet mastered it. It can improve both video quality and audio as well. |
