Keeping Your Website Content Fresh
By Christina Mulberry
If you're involved in internet marketing you have probably built a website or two. You may have other content pages as well, such as on Hubpages, Google Knol, or Squidoo. You may have designed them well and added interesting and useful content. Because your content was good, search engines have rewarded you with good placement in search results and people have visited your site regularly. Unfortunately, this won't be enough in most instances however. Over time your content can become less pertinent as it ages. If the content, images, and products on your site never change, visitors have fewer reasons to return. In addition, search engines may decide your site is abandoned and drop it lower in search engine results. Obviously none of this will help your website or other content pages perform well. Fresh content however can help remedy this problem. Adding new, interesting content on a routine basis is important. In blogging, you learn that writing on a regular basis is what helps you attract a following. On a website or other content page, the concept is the same. Whether you want to attract a following, generate repeat visits, or get more search engine recognition, fresh content is critical. There are a number of ways to keep fresh content on your website. Here are just a few ideas, some may or may not be appropriate for your topic area: -- Add a tip of the day A tip of the day is useful to your customers, quick to write, and can signal to search engines your site is active. If a tip of the day isn't appropriate for your subject area, you could consider a quote of the day, a photo of the day, or something else. It is also a possibility to operate on a less than daily basis, but remember the frequency will also determine how effective this strategy is for keeping your content fresh. -- Articles Certainly internet marketers tend to be involved in writing articles across the internet to develop backlinks and increase visibility. However, you might also consider posting new articles on your site for your visitors to browse. You need to be sure these articles are unique to your site so that they aren't seen as duplicate content. A way of saving time, can be to invite guest writers. This is similar to the concept used by bloggers. The guest writes the article and gets a link, your site gets fresh content. -- News It's also possible to add news items that are of interest. These are often found in a sidebar and can consist of links to pertinent current newstories. -- Widgets and RSS feeds There are many widgets available at no cost that you can plug into your site to get news, weather, quotes, entertainment information, sports scores, music, and so forth that changes daily. Of course RSS feeds on related topics can also be displayed on your site. For instance, if you run a movie review site, it's easy to go to the Netflix website and add their RSS feed for a given category, say top horror movies or new releases. The feed will list the top 10 movies in that category and provide a summary about the movie. Fresh content delivered with no effort. -- Update Products If you sell anything on your website, it's important to update products. We all know this of course, but we also need to be sure to have a regular schedule for doing this. Of course including a review is good, but that's not always possible. In these instances, adding a good description of the products; features, and so forth may suffice. -- Comments, Reviews, Forums, and Contests Inviting visitor comments can be great for developing a following, getting repeat visits, and so on. It's also a way of getting fresh content and demonstrating that yours is an active site. Forums are good for this reason too but certainly you want to have established traffic for this to succeed. In addition, allowing visitors to comment and rate products is another option. This not only gives you new content but it can also be genuinely useful for other visitors. Contests can also be a way freshening things up. Whether visitors submit photos for others to vote on or they submit the best recipe for chili, it keeps people interested and the content on your site updated. These are just a few of the many ideas for keeping fresh content on your website. It's important to assess how successful a given technique will be. If your time is limited or your following is small, you may want to start with the quickest ideas that don't require input from others until you are more established. |

Contests are a good idea. I have not done that yet, but it is in the back of my mind, as several online friends have used that gimmick. In fact I won some ad space in one such contest.

Free ad space sounds like a great prize!
This is very interesting and got me thinking for sure, one that has is such as others adding articles, like qondio, how would you go about that ? i would be grafeful of any advice on this if i were to do somthing similar to my collector45rpm site. how to do please anyone.

I think you can network in whatever way suits you. Some people meet up with others who write about similar topics through sites like Qondio, social bookmarking sites, or via their blog. Once you've met/befriended these individuals you can invite them to write a guest article offering them to include a link which you will post.
This is such a great set of tips - I had been thinking about how to keep my blogs fresh over the last couple of days - I particularly like the idea to have a tip of the day.

The tip of the day is particularly quick and easy. Often I have compiled a list of 100 tips. And I rotate through them. I add to the list periodically, but my tips get repeated every 5 or 6 months until my list expands more.
All good, pertinent stuff Christina. Thanks a bunch. Regards, Jim
Great set of tips, thanks. It really takes discipline to continuously add new content to sites, especially if you have several sites. I struggle with this all the time. I sometimes buy PLR articles, but of course, they have to be rewritten to make them unique and in my writing style.

I haven't used them to date, but I know many people do use the PLR articles with good results. I certainly maintain fresh content better on some sites than others...we simply can't do everything.
I wish I could get one of those water spray things like they have in the grocery stores that spray the produce every 15 minutes to keep my content fresh on my website.

:) If you find some of that, let me know. I need to stock up myself!
Great information, I do all the things you talk about and they all help to keep my site #1 on Google so that I can get lots of Free traffic. One other thing I do is a newsletter. After the newsletter is sent out it becomes a page on my website and that helps keep my content fresh. http://www.dog-first-aid-101.com/newsletter.html

Thank you for sharing all of these great content ideas, Christina. There is so much to be learned on this site from unselfish people, like yourself, who share their expertise. Best to you. Frederick
These are great ideas. I like to use RSS feeds of my blogs which are updated regularly.
