Internet Marketing Priorities

By Cristina Mulberry

As any experienced internet marketer can tell you, marketing products and services online is hard, and generally time consuming work. There are many ways to promote a website, from classified advertising and reciprocal linking, to writing articles, and blogging.

When those who are new to marketing online first enter the fray, there are many voices providing advice as to how they should spend their time and money. Not all of the voices provide neutral and trustworthy advice. Nor is there a way for newcomers to know which of the suggested promotion activities should be prioritized within their tight schedules.

Clearly, any given method of promoting an online business will be successful only if it is implemented well and is consistently applied. In addition, promotion methods that work well in one business or niche may be less effective in another. There are many variables.

However, it would be interesting, and perhaps useful to find out what experienced internet marketers feel is working. To discover where they feel their time is well spent, what promotion methods and which specific tools have brought them the most traffic, targeted visitors, sales, or even just backlinks that boosted their sites in search results.

A survey would be one method of gathering such data and allowing us to examine the collective thoughts of online marketers to see the trends; to discover those activities and tools which as a whole are viewed to be most important in online marketing efforts. An informal, survey has been developed to serve this function. Although not a scientifically constructed device, it may offer a glimpse into what real world online marketers are experiencing.

In the very initial phases of this survey the results are indicating that blogging is the most recommended promotion activity. Participation in related forums and building authority pages such as those found at sites like Hubpages, Squidoo, Google Knol, and Qassia are coming in for a tie at second. Activities such as microblogging with sites such as Twitter and list building/e-mail marketing came in a bit lower and tied for third place. Social marketing/bookmarking ranked fourth, while submitting webpages to directories and traffic exchanges came in a bit lower. Surprisingly writing articles and submitting them to directories did not elicit strong opinions about their importance. Classified advertising and reciprocal linking also have not made this list as activities online marketers should prioritize when time is limited.

Again, this survey is in the initial stages and results may well change as participation increases. Results too reflect only an average versus the results for any particular type of business.

The survey goes on to look at more specific recommendations. For instance, StumbleUpon is currently garnering the most votes from marketers as the social/bookmarking site most worthy of their time, while Technorati and Zimbio are tying for the the best place to promote their blogs. Squidoo currently has top spot for the best place to build "authority pages" but these results may be skewed as this is where the survey is posted and participation to this point has primarily been from Squidoo lensmasters.
