How to Promote Your Website

Untold numbers of new internet marketers have experienced the euphoria of completing work on their first website or webpage. Many of those same new entrepreneurs have then submitted their site to the search engines only to discover in the coming days that it isn't showing up in searches or receiving visitors.

Following the advice they've read, they submit their URL to various high ranking directories, place some classified ads, and perhaps pay for some banners as well. Still, the mantra of "build it and they will come" rings untrue. Adding their website URL to business cards, letterhead, e-mail signatures and more helps to get their name out in the real world, but still their website sits quitely in the vast world of the internet.

There are of course a number of ways to promote a website or webpage including paying sites like Google and Yahoo for premium text and display ads. Unfortunately for most new entrepreneurs, budgets can severely restrict the options. Luckily there are a number of tried and true promotion methods that will cost the new internet marketer nothing but time.

Without going into a full study of the art and science of internet marketing, it is important to note that one critical factor in determining where your site comes up in search engine results is related to your site's authority; or in simpler terms, the number of backlinks elsewhere on the internet pointing back to your website. The keywords included in these backlinks can help to assure that your site shows up when those same keywords are typed in by searchers using Google, Yahoo and other search engines.

Assuming that the website in question has been optimized with tags and keywords already, I will provide some brief tips for some of the most tried and true methods for promoting webpages to date.

1. Article Marketing: By writing useful and informative articles on topics related to your products or services, you can establish yourself as an expert. By submitting these articles to free online article directories these same articles can be used across the internet spreading the word for you with no further effort. Additionally, by including keyword text links in the author bio box at the end of your articles, your backlinks will spread with your article distribution.

2. Blogging: Blogging allows a business or internet marketer to again spread information on topics related to their product or services. This information should be useful and of interest to your intended audience rather than being an advertisement. Blog authors can again insert keyword text links back to their website pages. By marketing your blog on sites such as Zimbio, Technorati and others, your popularity can grow.

3. Other Writing Avenues: There are a number of other sites online that allow internet marketers and entrepreurs to post content for the purpose of reaching their audience and developing a few more backlinks to their site. Sites such as Gather, Squidoo, Hubpages, Zimbio, and Google Knol are just a few. As long as the content within the articles you write is unique and useful the time should be well spent.

4. Forums: Many potential customers can be found in forums that focus on topics related to your products and services. By seeking out these forums and interacting appropriately, you can establish your credibility, find out what customers are needing and wanting, and potentially create a few backlinks within your bio page.
In many instances you can develop a devoted following.

5. Social Bookmarking: From MySpace and Facebook to Del.icio.us and others, social bookmarking can be a great way of spreading the word and getting your content known. It is important to create a good bio page, connect with others, and become an active part of the community. Supporting others and providing good information is a must. Taking the time to develop "relationships" and to avoid "spamming" is as important in the online world as it is in the outside world. When bookmarks are shared or voted upon, backlinks are being built and the potential here is tremendous.

For those committed to building their online business, the number of promotion methods are numerous. It is critical to understand that the most effective promotion methods may vary from one business to another and in fact will probably change over time. In the online world, providing unique and useful information is generally the most successful way of impressing the search engines, capturing an audience, and guiding them to your site.
