How to Grab an Image or Screen Shot with Windows Vista

By Christina Mulberry

My computer crashed about a year and half ago. I was lost without it and it was going to cost more to fix it, than it was worth. I made the decision therefore, to invest in a new one. The problem was, due to some important deadlines, I needed to act fast; fast, as in that very afternoon. I marched down to the local Best Buy and found one that had the memory and the processing power I wanted, along with a price tag I could afford. It came with Windows Vista. Not what I really wanted, but it was my only choice. I took it home and became acquainted with it slowly.

I had a hard time adjusting, I'm old afterall. One of the functions that frustrated me was attempting to grab a screen shot. For some reason, the Paint program I was accustomed to using when performing this task was not to be found. After searching around a bit, and actually reading up on the problem, I found that there was an easier way of performing the task. It's known as the "Snipping Tool". It allows users to merely highlight the area that they want, an entire screen or just a portion of it, and grab it to use wherever they like providing they observe copyright protections when applicable. Here's how it works:

1. Click on the start button to bring up the Start Menu.

2. Select All Programs to view the entire list and then select Accessories.

3. You'll see the Snipping Tool here. After clicking on it, the screen will fade a bit as the Snipping Tool box appears on the page.

4. You can then click your mouse at the corner of the area you want to grab, then hold and drag to encircle the entire area.

5. When you release, the window will appear allowing you to save, copy, or share the image.

6. You can name the file, select the file type, and then save it.

In most instances, I have saved these as JPEG files because the clarity is better once I upload them elsewhere. If you want to highlight a particular area on the image you have grabbed, there is a highlighter indicated in the Snipping Tool box which allows you to draw on it as desired.
