How to Get Photos for Your Web Pages
By Christina Mulberry
If you are new to internet marketing, then you've been involved in setting up a website, writing articles, blogging, or developing standalone web pages. In addition, you've probably begun to promote that content to drive traffic to it. You are aware that the content you provide must be useful and unique. You know that it must be grammatically correct as well as interesting. You know that you want that content to quickly grab the attention of readers who have limited time and nearly endless content vying for their attention. To do this, you develop titles that pique interest. You craft your articles to be concise without long stretches of text so that readers aren't overwhelmed. But then you wonder, what else can you do to make your pages more appealing? What else will make your page stand out in the sea of content that is available? Once a visitor happens upon your page, photos, as well as video, can really attract attention. Photos make the page immediately more appealing and appear to be more professional than similar pages that lack this feature. Certainly as you write content about things you know and experience, you are able to take photographs and add them to your web pages, website, blogs, and so forth. However, if your photography skills are lacking or you simply aren't able to photograph the kinds of things you need, then you need to find other resources. There are many options online for finding photos to use that will match with the subject of your content, whatever that might be. In fact, if you have no budget and are seeking free photos to use, you still have plenty of choices. There are two sources that I use most frequently. Flickr of course is a great source for images. I have no budget for photos and, therefore, I seek only royalty free images. Therefore, when I search for photos on Flickr, I enter my search term and launch the search. Next, I select advanced search from the "search" drop down box, scroll to the bottom of the page, and select "Creative Commons" licensed content. Because I generally use the images I find on sale pages and for other commercial purposes, I also select "find content to use commercially". Once I've selected the photo I want from the advanced search results, I download it to my computer. I then include a photo credit on the page of content where I place that image; including a clickable link back to the photographer's page. I then leave a comment for the photographer on Flickr, to let them know where I used the photo and to thank them. I also find photos to use at AllPosters.com. This site sells a wide variety of prints, posters, wall murals and similar items. These are high quality images and I've used them when writing about food, recipes, celebrities, historical figures, movies, nature, and more. To use images from AllPosters, you merely need to sign up as an affiliate. This is free of course. Once you have signed up, you can go to the link builder, and search for a static link based upon the topic you will be writing about. The HTML for the image will be provided. You can modify it to remove any text that you don't want. The great part of the using AllPosters for some of your images, is that you can also earn commissions if someone clicks on the images you have posted and makes a purchase. Certainly, these images won't be appropriate for all of your content, but in some instances, they add a lot of visual appeal when they fit your topic. I will add a couple of links to some of my pages that use AllPosters images on them so that you can see how it looks. There are of course, other sites where you can find photos for your blog and other pages. The process is the same however. If you don't have a budget for photos, you'll need to find royalty free, creative commons licensed images or contact the photographer to get permission to use the photo. It takes a bit of extra time, but the presentation of your page is greatly enhanced by adding images. |

An excellent intel, thank you for sharing. I was not aware of the All Posters source. Good to know.
Thank you for listing these photo websites, Christina. I think that images enhance our intels. I wish the images would show when we email the intel through the system. Best wishes. Frederick
The primary reason why I blog is not to make money, but rather to show off my photos. I like to take pictures and talk about them, therefore I never run out of things to post. I do run out of time, however. I did not know that about All Posters, although I visit their site often. That is good to know.
Of course the best place to get photos as you mention is those you take yourself with a digital camera. Not only are they royalty free but they are often unique one of a kind pictures. Here are the links to the two you mention. Flickr.com and Allposters.com both of which are excellent sources of pictures.
I finally got around to reading this intel! Thanks for the tips. I have not been using flickr and now I will be, it seems like a great option. Thanks!
The best photos are those you took yourself, but at times there is just nothing in even the most prolific tog's galleries.
Great article Christina. AllPosters sounds interesting.
Photos make a big difference to a website or blog, as it's usually the first thing people see. I use photos all the time on my blogs, etc., and have a few favourite sites, but haven't heard of AllPosters, so thanks for bringing it to my attention; I'll check it out. 5 stars.
