How to Get a SIM Card for Travel
By Cristina Mulberry
International travelers have learned that in order to use a cell phone outside of their home country, they must have a compatible cell phone and service. This means the cell phone must be able to operate off of the same type of network (GSM, CDMA, etc.) and frequencies as used in the country where they will be visiting. GSM phones are a good choice for those traveling to Europe especially. A GSM phone operates with a removable SIM card. A SIM card is the memory card inside of a GSM phone. It contains the information that identifies a particular phone to the cellular company and holds the information stored on a personal phone. Personal information may include text messages, the phone book, number, and more. Of course, whether they have a GSM phone with a SIM card or another type of phone, travelers have to pay international roaming rates when calling within the country they will be visiting. However, with a GSM phone there is another option. With a GSM phone, travelers can choose to purchase a local SIM card. The local SIM card will provide them with a local number and service. A prepaid local SIM card will operate on the local frequencies and eliminate costly roaming fees on calls within the country. In addition, local SIM cards offer the convenience of obtaining those minutes without committing to a contract. In many other countries outside of the US, callers pay only for calls made and not for calls received, stretching the minutes even further. For those who want to make use of local SIM cards when traveling, it is easy to purchase cards over the internet for convenient travel planning. Websites such as Telestial.com, InTouchSmartCards.com, and callineurope.com among others are available. It is also possible to purchase cards upon arrival in the country of destination but certainly planning ahead can make arrival a smoother process. |
