How to Enjoy Photography Even in Wet Environments
By Christina Mulberry
Most of us love to snap photos of the sights we see when on a trip or excursion to help us remember our adventures and experiences. However, for those who are active, delicate cameras don't always mix well with our activities. Drops can be a crushing blow, dust can scratch the lens or invade the internal parts of the camera, extreme temperatures can cause havoc on the electronics, and moisture can be especially deadly as it corrodes. Luckily, not all digital cameras are created equally as far as their ability to withstand the elements. Some can endure the shock of a fall much more readily and others are designed to repel attempts by foreign matter to penetrate the outer housing. For anyone who enjoys snowboarding, skiing, snorkeling, and other activities that would expose their camera to water, there are a couple of options. If you have a digital camera you already love, there is the option of finding a waterproof housing that will protect it from moisture. Purchasing the housing made specifically for your camera model is the surest way to get the best fit but there are of course aftermarket models that are made by companies other than the original manufacturer. These housings vary in cost from around $35 to a over $200. Buyers should check to be sure at what depth the housing will continue to function before buying to assure that it will suit their needs. The second option is to consider the purchase of a waterproof camera. For the average user there are a handful of options available priced between $200 and $300. Both Olympus and Pentax are the primary manufacturers of these more affordable waterproof cameras. The Olympus Stylus 1050SW and the Pentax Optio W60 are among the possibilities. For those on a tighter budget there are also options including disposables and kids camera models which are around $25 and up. Certainly a waterproof camera can be used in more gentle environments as well and it doesn't need to be viewed as an additional purchase, separate from your daily use camera. For this reason it's wise to consider all of the features you want on a camera before selecting the waterproof model you want.
