How to Determine if Your Cell Phone Will Work When You Travel
By Cristina Mulberry
This author has written several articles about traveling with a cell phone. Finding one that will operate with the type of network and the frequencies used in the country where you are traveling is critical. The question that often comes up however, is how to find out what type of network and what frequencies are being used in your country of destination. It's fairly simple actually as there are resources on line that can help you track down the information you need. Probably the most useful site is GSMWorld.com which can tell you about the networks, services, frequencies, and roaming partners available across the globe. Just click on the country you are interested in learning about. CDMA networks aren't prevalent but they are of course used in the US and in a few Asian countries. There is a Wikipedia entry on CDMA that offers a list of countries using this type of network. (see the links listed below) For those who find they don't have a phone that is compatible, the option of renting phones is often a possibility through companies that specialize in cell phone rental as well as through many of the traditional cell phone companies in the US.
