How to Design Your Own Custom Greeting Cards
By Cristina Mulberry
I can be pretty picky when it comes to gifts and related items. I take a bit of time to decide what I think would be just the right fit for someone and then I don't stop until I find just the right thing. I'm sometimes that way even with a simple greeting card. I like for it to be personal, creative, and to show that I really care. For this reason, I can spend a fair amount of time at the store browsing through a hundred cards trying to find one with the right look or the right wording. Luckily, I've discovered that a better option might be to simply create my own greeting cards. Certainly, crafting is an option, and but it's pretty time consuming and I'm not always able to achieve the look I want. However, I've discovered that there are print on-demand companies online that can allow me to very quickly create greeting cards that look quite professional using my own artwork or photography. I'm not an artist or photographer, but I'm able to create some nice personalized greeting cards and you should be able to do it as well. In fact, if you find you're really good at it, you can sell some of your creations online and make some extra money as well. There are quite a few sites that will let you create custom cards like Buzzle.com, Cardstore.com, Supprint.com, CafePress.com, and Zazzle.com. The only site I have personally used is Zazzle and I'm happy with the quality of the products that they put out, so it's the one I will refer to here. Here is the basic process: 1. If you go to Zazzle and register, your next step will be to go to "Create" at the top of the home page. 2. You will then be able to select the type of product you want to design in the left hand margin of the page. In our case, you will be looking for Greeting Cards. 3. Once you've selected the product, you'll be given the "Create a Card" button. Next, you'll select the card size you want, full size or note card size, under "card options". 4. Under "Customize It" you will be able to add the image and text (inside and on the face of the card) that you want. You can use photos that you have downloaded to your computer or art that you've scanned or produced through any of the various graphic design/desktop publishing software. You can add borders and background colors as you wish, change the orientation of your artwork or photography, and so forth from this same tab. 5. If you prefer to use an existing template rather than creating your own art or photography, you can do that too. The Template tab will allow you to browse through the various options available on Zazzle. You add the text, and Zazzle users provide the art. 5. Once you're done designing your own custom greeting card, you simply add it to your cart and soon you'll be sending out your own creations. If you find that you really enjoy this process of designing and creating, you may find that it's something you would like to do for profit. Zazzle gives you the option of posting your creations for sale, at no cost. You can build an entire store and you don't have to stop at greeting cards if you have bigger aspirations. Calendars, posters, T-shirts, ties, mugs, keychains, and dozens of other options for making use of your designs are available. |
