How to Control What and How Much Television Young Children Watch

By Christina Mulberry

Children are exposed to media for several hours each day. From televisions and print materials, to radio, computers, and video games, a child spends more time with such media than they do with teachers and sometimes even parents. Understandably, parents are often concerned with the content to which their young children are exposed. Violence and sexual content are usually items of prime concern.

There are of course a number of things that parents can do to counteract the influence of media but with young children one of the most basic and effective is to restrict exposure. In fact, there are a number of options available to parents to help them manage this.

-- Parental Controls

For a number of years all televisions with a 13 inch screen or larger has had a V-chip installed. This chip allows parents to program the set to limit viewing of programming based on ratings. In addition, most cable and satellite TV providers offer additional parental control features to give parents the option of restricting what their children can tune in.

-- A Remote Control for Young Children

The "Wee Remote" is a product that has been on the market for a few years. It's an infrared remote control that gives parents the freedom of leaving the room while their child is watching television and yet maintain the ability to restrict what they can choose to view. Parents can select which channels the remote will allow to be tuned in and can also restrict how loud the volume can be turned up. A young child has a sense of control and independence without adults having to worry about them being exposed to inappropriate content. These devices run around $25.

-- Screen Time Managers

One popular device is "Bob" the Screen Time Manager. This device can connect to a television, computer, or video game system to restrict time spent on these activities. Parents can identify and set a time limit for daily or weekly use and they can also block certain times of day when they want such devices to be completely inaccessible. Bob can handle up to 6 different users with different limits and is tamper-proof. It's a bit more sophisticated than the remote control and can be found for under $80.

-- No TV in the Bedroom

For young children especially, it's much easier to restrict viewing if television is watched only in the main family room. Of course a compromise can be to place a TV without a cable/satellite/antenna connection in the room and allow your child to view preselected DVD content. With this set up there is no opportunity for unapproved content to be tuned in yet the child can have some sense of independence.

Certainly, restricting viewing isn't a complete answer, particularly as children begin to mature. However, parents with young children do have some options which can help them in managing what their children see and hear in the media.
