How to Choose a No Contract Cell Phone

By Cristina Mulberry

Cell phone plans are great for most individuals and families. By committing to a 2 year contract, the cell phone itself is often deeply discounted or even free. The per minute cost of calling is also lower with a contract in place.

However, for some people a 2 year contract isn't the way to go. Some consumers don't want to make the committment, they want to keep their options open. Others can't get a contract due to an insufficient credit history. Many simply don't want a traditional plan because their needs are more simple, they won't use the large quantities of talk time included in a typical plan nor do they want to pay the monthly fee. Of course, for some it's also a matter of wanting a budget control that won't allow them to inadvertently exceed their minutes.

In any of these scenarios, a no contract cell phone is the way to go. There are two primary ways of getting such a phone. One is to buy an unlocked cell phone; easily found online through sites such as e-Bay. The other option is to go with a prepaid cell phone. The prepaid option is probably the most popular of the two possibilities as they are available through well established retailers/providers.

Certainly TracFone and Virgin Mobile are two of the better known prepaid providers. However, traditional carriers also offer prepaid services. (You can learn more about them at the link posted below.)

Certainly, when shopping for a prepaid phone with minutes, there are several things to consider.

-- What is the per minute cost of calling?

-- How is a minute of talk time "billed"? Are partial minutes rounded up to the next minute for instance? This can play a significant role in how quickly a caller consumes their minutes.

-- Is there an expiration date on the minutes? For instance, if you purchase 30 minutes, how long do you have to use them before they expire?

-- How can you purchase more minutes? Can you do it online, or will you have to go to the store?

-- What is your typical cell phone usage? Knowing this assures you don't purchase more minutes than you will use during the period of time before they expire.
