Choosing a Camera Phone with Flash

By Christina Mulberry

Camera phones are the most popular digital cameras on the market. This is probably due in part to the fact that nearly all of us carry a cell phone, and having a camera included makes these devices very handy, allowing us to never miss a shot. Of course, the average camera phone may not have as many features as a standalone digital camera, but in reality, the modern camera phone is capable of producing some nices photos all the same.

Of course considering the sensor size, the lens quality, and the presence of features like optical zoom and image stabilization are very important when choosing a good camera phone. So too, are other physical attributes like the screen size, memory capacity, and so forth. However, one often overlooked attribute is the camera phone's flash capabilities.

Camera phones have been infamous for years for their poor low light shooting abilities. Built in flash is certainly a plus for anyone wanting to take photos of subjects indoors, where light is often more limited, or at night.

So if you're thinking of purchasing a camera phone, and hope for some decent low light shooting ability, what should you consider?

1. A built-in flash that sits away from the lens. Most subjects will look directly at the camera phone when being photographed. If the flash sits directly beside the lens, this will probably result in some serious "red eye effect". Of course, you can prompt your human subjects to look away a bit, but it's simpler to use a camera where the flash is better situated.

2. LED Flash. A built-in LED flash is a good start. However, they aren't very powerful and you'll find you have to be very close to get adequate illumination. In addition, you may find your subjects are illuminated but the image you capture will become increasingly dark as you go away from the center of the photo. A dual LED flash can help to boost the illumination.

3. Xenon Flash. A Xenon flash will provide more illumination than an LED flash. They have a better range allowing you to step back a bit from your subjects and giving your printed images better lighting across the entire image. The down side to these flashes are that they use more battery power.

4. Built-in lighting for video. With more an more camera phones also offering video recording as well as still image photography, you also need to consider illumination for your video. Generally, LED is needed as these flashes can remain illuminated rather than just firing for a quick burst. Thus dual LED is a preferred flash for these purposes.

In summary, a built-in flash is handy for the average camera phone user when shooting in low light situations, as long as subjects are within several feet. A dual LED flash is often preferred when recording video but a Xenon flash tends to provide the best lighting for still photography.
