Beautiful, Historic Madison, Indiana
By Cristina Mulberry
Madison, Indiana lies on the Indiana side of the Ohio River only 57 miles northeast of Louisville, Kentucky accessible from US Interstate 65 or 71. Established in 1809 this town grew with the river trade, faded, and then came back to life as a rejuvenated, historic center attracting tourists. It's current population hovers around 13,000. Referenced by many notable sources for it's "pretty" appearance, it is also valued by those appreciative of arts, antiques, wineries, riverboats, and outdoor activities. Madison is surrounded by a rolling, wooded landscape that provides even greater small town charm and assures an interesting drive. Sites such as the Lanier Mansion, Jermemiah Sullivan House, and Francis Costigan House allow visitors to step back in time to see the beautiful architecture and gardens that the wealthy inhabitants of the town enjoyed. Dr. Willima Hutchings' Office and Hospital, the Madison Railroad Station, and the Schroeder Saddletree Factory Museum are among the other sites which offer a glimpse into the less luxurious aspects of life in the 1800's. There are six wineries in the hills surrounding Madison as well as various scenic drives, bicycling routes, and a wildlife refuge. Clifty Falls State Park, perched just on the city limits, offer miles of hiking trails and nearby Shilo Farms provides plenty of opportunities for horse back riding. Many festivals occur throughout the year. For those who love speed, the July 4th Madison Regatta is legendary with it's 200mph boats. The Madison Chautauqua Fesitval of Arts and the Nights Before Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes are among some of the other more popular events. With a fine selection of restaurants and confectioneries, bed and breakfasts, as well as antiques and art shopping, visitors to the area are sure to find many interesting things to do. |
