A Camera Based Language Lesson for Kids

By Cristina Mulberry

As covered in other Qassia articles by this author, a digital camera can be an important learning tool for children. It can also add a great deal of fun and foster an interesting hobby as well.

The list of learning objectives that can be met while using a digital camera is long, but certainly language skills are near the top of the list; both verbal and written skills. For those who haven't used a camera for focused activities with children, coming up with meaningful assigments isn't really difficult but a few examples may be needed to get the ideas flowing.

For very young children, a simple language task to develop vocabulary and categorization skills is a good start. The assignment quite simply can be to capture pictures of animals, cars, trees, flowers, round objects, pink objects, hard objects, soft objects, objects that come in pairs, and so forth. Seeking out the objects is part of the learning process as well as organizing and labeling them.

When working with more than one child, each could be asked to photograph 5 things; then as a group they bring the photographs together and have to categorize them. A more advanced task would be to form a story with randomly drawn photos from the group. This could be done verbally or in written form.

For children who are just a bit older, starting a class paper can also be a great way of improving written language skills. For instance, a monthly "publication" could be the responsibility of different "reporters/photographers" each cycle. Columns could include things such as:

"What Did We Do This Month?" which could include photos of a key project and a short story

"Meet This Month's ___ School Employee" which might incorporate a photograph of the employee and a paragraph about them wirtten by the reporter

"Meet This Month's Reporters" with photos and a written paragraph

"Other Important News" that could include achievements such winning a spelling contest, a new child in class, or some other noteworthy events.

Cameras by themselves will seldom be the focus of a learning activity once children are taught how to handle them. However, by using them, they can help to focus attention, create an excitement, and promote pride in the finished product.
